Listen to This: James Cameron’s Hour-Long WGA Interview on
Screenwriting/Avatar
(from slashfilm.com)
"Last month, after a screening of
Avatar at the Writers Guild Theater for WGA members, James Cameron
spoke with F. X. Feeney about his writing process throughout his career
and in the creation of Avatar. I know a lot of people like to make the
easy jokes, and write off Avatar for having an over-simplistic plot, but
for anyone who really wants to delve deeper — you should really find
time to listen to this one hour and ten minute interview/question &
answer session."
James Cameron's big-budget (and even bigger-grossing) films create unreal worlds all their own. In this personal talk, he reveals his childhood fascination with the fantastic -- from reading science fiction to deep-sea diving -- and how it ultimately drove the success of his blockbuster hits "Aliens," "The Terminator," "Titanic" and "Avatar."

Extract: "However, Jake actually goes through a metamorphosis in which he doesn’t just learn to see things from another perspective, but actually looses one identity and gains another. In this journey, Jake goes through four ages/rebirths common in many mythological structures: the first rebirth is when he first gets his avatar; at this stage Neytiri accuses him of being a “child”. The second rebirth is when he gets his ikran (the bird they fly on) in the trials that must be passed by adolescent Na’Vi. The third rebirth is his acceptance to the clan, which Jake tells his commander is the “last stage in becoming a man” and becoming a full member of the clan. The fourth stage is when Jake bonds with the Toruk, fulfilling the position in a legend last held by a clan elder, as told by Neytiri. Thus we see the full cycle – infancy/childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and elder – something I can’t remember seeing in previous retellings, and which gives the story a different purpose than previous stories in which the white man essentially steals the indigenous knowledge then goes back to save his own people. The cycle is completed at the very end when Jake transfers to permanently to his Na’Vi body, his human body literally dying with his soul reborn in a new body, presumably returning to the beginning of the cycle."

5 bare facts about Sam Worthington (translation from moviepilot.de):
Hardly a star of the past few years has emerged so suddenly and became so quickly successful as Sam Worthington. Reason enough to take his life once more under the microscope. Here are a few bare facts about the Australian charmer for you.
Sam Worthington is one who gives the word a shooting star a whole new meaning. Prior to his role in Terminator Salvation the handsome actor was only known to the Australian audience. There he already celebrated success with Somersault and Bootmen and gained his first awards. In Terminator Salvation, he was a cyborg, and in many scenes stole his co-star Christian Bale the show. Since then, he can hardly save himself from leading roles, played the male lead character in James Cameron's Avatar, the blockbuster of the decade. Soon he will be seen as Perseus in the highly anticipated Clash of Titans, a remake of the same Clash of Titans from 1981. Before his international breakthrough Sam Worthington had tough times to survive. Here are a few bare facts about the Australian:
The 1 bare fact: Sam Worthington was homeless
After his 30th
birthday he had an existential crisis. Although he had several
successful roles behind him, the so-called Quarter Life Crisis hit him
with full force. His solution? He sold all his belongings and spent the
money. In the end, he stayed with around $ 2000 and his car. He made
himself comfortable and lived in it. He'd probably still be mistaken as a
motorized tramp through Australia, if James Cameron would not have
offered him the role in Avatar. This opportunity was not to be missed,
Sam Worthington immediately said yes. (Interview with Rove McManus via
youtube)
The 2nd bare fact: Sam Worthington was almost called James
Prior
to Terminator Salvation, Sam Worthington had sought to international
roles. Once he was so close that we could have met the action hero
almost under the name James. Bond, James Bond. Sam Worthington was in
the finals of the auditions for James Bond - Casino Royale, but then
Daniel Craig was granted the award. Sam Worthington certainly would have
been an equally brutal James Bond. (imdb)
The 3rd bare fact: Sam Worthington is lucky
Sam Worthington came
to acting by chance. When his then-girlfriend in 1998 applied for a
place at the Australian National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), he
joined in and auditioned for fun. Without knowledge of dramatic roles
and extensive training the previous bricklayer made it through the
trials, was surprisingly accepted and received a scholarship. The friend
did not get in and left Sam a week later. (screencave)
The 4th bare fact: Sam Worthington is an English gentleman
Actually,
the blond guy looks like a typical Australian: Of course, directly and
loosely drawn, we can imagine him on the beach rather than in a suit and
with an umbrella in rainy England. But Sam Worthington's family is from
Godalming in Surrey. Soon after his birth, his parents, his father an
electrician and his mother a housewife, immigrated to Australia. There,
Sam Worthington grew up with his sister. (Wikipedia)
The 5th bare fact: Sam Worthington needs to wear glasses
Whether
out of vanity or laziness: Sam Worthington can see all just blurred, but
bears no visual aid. Maybe he decides to wear glasses when he is
seeking to play more intellectual and less action-based roles. (imdb)
Sam Worthington is still firmly rooted in the action genre and will soon appear as Perseus in Clash of Titans, coming to cinemas on April 1st.
